Top 5 ways to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day
At this point, anyone with a computer and a random craving could declare any day on the calendar to be National Pizza Day, or National Rhubarb Day, and social media being what it is, the world would believe it in a matter of hours. But when we learned that today is National Peanut Butter Day, we thought "who are we to argue?" Here we give you the top five ways to celebrate this auspicious occasion here in the Twin Cities:
It's peanut butter jelly time!
1. Hell's Kitchen's Homemade Peanut Butter
The stuff of legend, Hell's Kitchen's peanut butter is so famously delicious they sell it by the jar both at the restaurant and online. Made with coarsely chopped roasted peanuts, brown sugar, and honey, this isn't your mama's jar of Skippy. This YouTube video gives you a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of this gooey deliciousness, and the recipe is even available on Epicurious for those who want to try their hand at making a batch of their own.
2. The Blue Door Pub's Jiffy Burger
This Blue Door Pub burger took home the City Pages' grand prize for Best Burger in 2009 for its "tender, seasoned patty topped with three chewy strips of thick-cut bacon, melted pepper jack cheese, a slather of mayonnaise, and an improbable swipe of crunchy peanut butter." Nothing like putting some more fat and protein on top of your fat and protein. You know you want one.
3. The Hot Plate Diner's Peanut Butter Pancakes
This kitschy Nokomis neighborhood diner is comfortable, colorful, and just adventurous enough to pour some creamy peanut butter right into their pancake mix. If you've never tried putting peanut butter on your pancakes, you don't know what you've been missing. The salty creaminess blends perfectly with the sweetness of a pancake. The Hot Plate takes it one genius step further and mixes it all together from the get-go.
4. The Sample Room's Peanut Butter Brownie
The Sample Room, nestled on a perch overlooking the Mississippi in Nordeast Minneapolis, offers plenty of appetizing noshes and nibbles on its menu, including a chocolate peanut butter brownie, "topped with chocolate ganache, sprinkled with peanut butter bacon dust and a thick-cut chunk of chocolate-covered bacon." Need we say more?
5. Amazing Thailand's Amazing Curry
If there's one cuisine that knows its way around a peanut butter jar, it's Thai. Uptown's Amazing Thailand made its signature curry dish a glorious spicy-crunchy-sweet peanut curry served with broccoli and your choice of meat (or non-meat). It's healthy because there's broccoli in it! We'll take two, please.
