The traditional gift for the first anniversary celebration is paper. We're wrapping up a paper boat, interpretative collage, and a little origami for the upcoming one-year milestones for the Current, just off the river in Afton; Gather, tucked into the monster-head of the Walker Art Center; and Masu Sushi & Robata on Hennepin.

The Current, the revamped restaurant attached to the Afton Inn, is marking one year of refined bar food. Known for its fantastic wine collection, addictive truffle fries, and gluten-free options, the Current is celebrating on May 1. Whisper "Happy Birthday" to your server and win a free dessert for the table and get entered to win a $50 Current gift certificate. The drawing takes place at 9 p.m.

is celebrating its first year June 7. Executive chef Josh Brown will be serving two free appetizers, as he does every first Thursday of the month. They will be a citrus-cured salmon with horseradish, creme fraiche, rye crumbs and trout caviar, and a crispy pork belly with curry, apples, and a celery root slaw. If the weather cooperates, it could be an ideal cheap date night on one of the best patios in the cities.

has spent the last year serving us great ramen (the tonkatsu), gorgeous, sustainable sushi, and charred, crispy bits from the grills. From the Johnny Michaels drink list to the eye-popping Shea-designed decor, Masu has brought a special zing to northeast Minneapolis. To celebrate its first year it will be offering sake shots for only a dollar and free edamame all day Wednesday.
