Recently, while in northeast Minneapolis, we stopped off at the Red Stag Supper Club to check out its happy hour happenings. Here's what we found:
Venue: The overall aesthetic of the dining room is... interesting. The room appears to be part German hunting lodge, part Black Lodge from Twin Peaks--relaxing, but in an oddly eerie kind of way.
The Red Stag has several drink specials at happy hour. All domestic beers are $3, and select taps are $4. It also offers basic rail cocktails if you need the extra punch. We ordered a nicely made gin and tonic. We may not be in the throes of summer just yet, but we're definitely ready for gin-and-tonic season.

The Red Stag doesn't offer any food specials at happy hour, but we did order a few appetizers. The smelt fries were delicious. The tiny fish come fried with a light cornmeal crust. They're served with a sweet onion tarter sauce and a smoked tomato ketchup. The dips add different dimensions to the mini-fishes, which are an out-of-the-ordinary happy hour snack.
We also ordered the potted meat. The dish changes frequently, but on this night it was a succulent pork rillete. The rich, creamy pork is served with a deeply caramelized onion jam, a few large caper berries, and some butter baguette slices. Again, it's an unusual bar-food snack we can get behind.

Verdict: Overall the Red Stag Supper Club has the right atmosphere for a well-spent happy hour. A couple of things could really up their game: putting together a small menu of discounted snacks and a few of the cocktails off their fancy cocktail menu.
