As part of its Great American Bites series, USA Today issued a list of 51 (one selection for each state, including D.C.) great pizza parlors. Thanks to a recommendation from James Norton, editor of local food blog The Heavy Table, Fat Lorenzo's is the choice for Minnesota.

Here's its assessment of the longtime Nokomis-area favorite:

USA Today calls it "cozy, friendly, a hub of neighborhood activity, and as comfortable as an old pair of sneakers." All true, and you can't beat a place where you can color on the butcher paper table coverings while you wait for your food to come out. But what we think really puts this place over the top is the house-made gelato.

Using its imported machine, Fat Lorenzo's kitchen team creates intensely flavored creamy gelato in flavors like cinnamon, strawberries and cream, green tea, kiwi, and the classic, gorgeously colored blood orange gelato.
