Solera hosts second annual Farm in the Cities

Taste the best of local, sustainable foods at this fabulous fundraiser

A collection of local, sustainable food producers and the area's top chefs will gather Sunday, September 23, at Solera to share food and help raise money for Youth Farms. Guests are invited to attend an early, free meet-and-greet with the farmers, or attend a full-on foodie bash with a seven-course meal -- and you won't believe the affordable ticket price.

The stunning meal once came with a price tag equivalent to what you would pay for this sort of dining experience in one of the chefs' restaurants, but for this fundraiser, attendees can buy a ticket for just $45.

The early part of the evening, which is free and open to the public, will feature the farmers, such as Dragsmith Farms, Hidden Streams, Castle Rock Organic Dairy, and many more, who are available to talk about what makes their farms so special, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Immediately afterward, guests will be invited to a special-event space, and the big-ticket dinner will begin with Mike Phillips of Three Sons Meat (formerly Green Ox) and his stunning coppa and sauerkraut crackers. I've had this stuff, and it's hard not to want to shove a few napkins full of these generously fatty, highly flavored treats in a suitcase-sized purse. As of right now, there are precious few opportunities to sample his artistry.

Most of the following courses will have two notable chefs pairing up. Wyatt Evans of W.A. Frost and Lenny Russo of Heartland will serve a chilled summer soup and stuffed, tempura-fried squash blossom. Solera's own chef Jorge Guzman and Fernando Silvio of the new Harriet Brasserie are serving Grand Marais pickled herring and smoked trout roe. Steven Brown of Tilia and Landon Schoenefeld of Haute Dish are working up a sturgeon and foie gras terrine, which sounds like an intriguing taste experience from two culinary masters. Other chefs include Jack Riebel of Butcher and the Boar, Matt Paulson of the Sample Room, Brian Hauke of Red Stag, and Sarah Master of Cafe Barbette. It's a dizzying array of talent. And the price of admission also includes wine pairings with each course.
