Oysterfest at Meritage pits chef against chef for the bivalve battle royal
Last year it was a day of beer, wine, sunshine, hundreds of bivalves, and one epic oyster-shucking contest. The bar has been set high, but this year's Oysterfest is sure to be a good time for anyone who loves those briny, fresh, sloppy kisses from the ocean. This year is gearing up to be bigger, bolder, and if at all possible, even better than last year.

Held inside and out at Meritage in downtown St. Paul, the event shuts down St. Peter Street for the party. The all-day celebration includes oyster classes, beer brewed from oyster shells from Summit Brewery, live music, and a thrilling oyster shuck-off featuring some of the top chefs in the cities.

What can we expect this year?

An Oyster 101 class will be taught by Meritage chef-owner Russell Klein, Chris Sherman of Island Creek Oyster Farms, and Adam James of Hama Hama Oyster Farms to get a basic understanding of oysters, which they call a "perfect and completely sustainable food."

Again, the oysters will come from several farms on both coasts. They will also have pairing stations set up, so guests can choose from beer, wine, or cocktails to enhance their bivalve experience.

If oysters aren't enough, plenty of other delicious foods will be available to graze on: lobster rolls, fried clams, oyster po' boys, burgers, a limited bar menu, and the Meritage crepe stand.

Entertainment includes local music as well as the local chefs battling for bragging rights of fastest shucker. Last year's winner was Vincent Francoual of Vincent - A Restaurant, who plowed through those little suckers like a machine.

Tickets are limited and on sale now. VIP passes are $100 and include unlimited oysters, a pint of the Summit oyster brew with a commemorative glass, two additional drink passes, and a gift bag filled with goodies from the event's sponsors.

General admission passes are $25 and include a pass for a dozen oysters and a pint of the oyster brew.

Oysterfest will be held Sunday, September 30, from noon to 8 p.m. To find out more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Meritage website.

what a waste of money!  3 hours and only had 5 oysters   the shuckers were amatuers and destroyed the shell and therefore the oyster; like slurping glass.   imagine the state fair with one beer tent in 100 degree weather, thats how packed this was

This year's Oysterfest was a disaster. Close to an hour wait times in lines. Oversold and understaffed. Not worth $100.
