Last year, before their beer was even brewing, the owners of the soon-to-open Smokehouse Brewpub made waves with their "free beer for life" offer to any investor who made a donation of $1,000 or more. After nearly two years and an $800,000 build-out of the space at 38th Street East and 28th Avenue South, just off the light rail line, Smokehouse is ready to give those smart investors -- and the rest of the general public -- the first tastes of the beer and food they put their faith in so many months ago.
Here are the details on the grand opening and what you can expect to see on the menu:
The brewpub will start out with four flagship brews: a honey wheat ale made with locally sourced honey; Light Rail, a pale ale; Big Jim IPA; and a namesake porter. Seasonal brews, including a wild rice amber ale that debuted at the Autumn Brew Review in Minneapolis, are already in the tanks, and some will likely be on tap in time for the opening. Head brewer Jamie Robinson got his start brewing and much of his managerial experience at Town Hall Brewery and readily admits that the style and flavors of Smokehouse's beers will be influenced by Town Hall's beers.
As far as food goes, chef Bryce Strickler's menu focuses on ... smoked stuff, of course. But don't confuse that with barbecue, because it's different. The tone of the menu seems very casual and beer-friendly, with items like a smoked turkey salad sandwich, smoked trout and spinach salad, smoked whitefish spread on crostini, a porketta sandwich (we're intrigued), and BLTs with house-smoked bacon. They'll strive to obtain their proteins and produce from local farms whenever possible.
In addition to beer and smoked meats, the brewpub will also serve mixed drinks from a full bar, highlighting whiskey, bourbon, and other tipples that complement the food.
The grand opening is Thursday, and from that day on, the brewpub's hours will be Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday through Saturday 11 a.m. - 2 a.m.
