It's Iron Fork time this Week in Food!
If you spent the weekend snacking on brains zombie-style, it might be nice to mix up the menu a bit and explore something a little less ... raw. Fortunately this Week in Food is packed with options, including City Pages' own Iron Fork competition.
The annual Iron Fork competition returns on Thursday!
It's World Food Day today, a global movement with the goal of ending hunger around the globe. What can you do? Come to the World Food Day Potluck Dinner at United Christ Church in Golden Valley for an evening of live art, spoken word performances, and a live chef demo of the GROW Method Meal. All you have to do is bring your favorite dish (and incorporate one or more of the GROW method principles if you can) to share with the group. Expand your appetizer repertoire at the Linden Hills Co-op Tuesday night, where Anu Seshadri hosts Classic Indian Appetizers beginning at 6:30 p.m. Students will explore fall with Indian flavors like Masala chai, samosas (crispy turnovers stuffed with spicy potato-pea filling), and Mumbai tartlets done two ways. The fee for this hands-on class is $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers, and you can register by calling 612.922.1159.
Dunn Bros. loyalists, mark your calendars: Thursday is the sixth anniversary of the Dunn Bros. location at the historic Smith Douglas More house in Eden Prairie. That means special in-store offers all day long that include free 12-ounce brewed coffee all day; buy one/get one at half price on all packages of coffee beans; $4 glasses of wine; and $2 beers all day. The store is open from 6:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., so there's plenty of time to take advantage of the celebration.
Thursday night is also the return of the annual City Pages Iron Fork competition at International Market Square. Chef Seth Bixby Daugherty hosts this throwdown in which six local chefs -- including Tilia's Steven Brown and Haute Dish's Landon Schoenfeld -- compete to create the most appetizing and healthy dish from an ingredient that is revealed on the spot. There's also a bartender competition, the chance to sample signature dishes from 15 local restaurants, and plenty of boozy samples as well. A portion of the proceeds benefits Second Harvest Heartland, so your $30 in advance/$40 at the door goes to a good cause. Tickets can be purchased online for this event, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m.
Author Tricia Cornell speaks at Slow Food MN's third annual Writer's Night
Are you a budding food writer? Sunday night's third annual Slow Food Minnesota: Writer's Night is the perfect chance to explore those urges. Bring a dish to share for the potluck and enjoy presentations by three local authors: Tricia Cornell, author of Eat More Vegetables; Attina Diffley, author of Turn Here Sweet Corn; and Beth Dooley, author of The Northern Heartland Kitchen. Slow Food will provide a dish related to each book as well as coffee and tea. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for nonmembers and the event begins at 4 p.m. at Lauderdale City Hall (1891 Walnut Street, Lauderdale) on the U of M St. Paul Campus.
