Add some extra spice to your fall beer this weekend

If artistic pumpkin-carving has never been your forte but you still want to make something festive for your Halloween party this weekend, consider hollowing out a squash and filling it with beer. Seriously.

A pumpkin keg takes about a half hour and about 10 or 15 bucks worth of materials to make, depending on the size of your pumpkin and how fancy you decide to go with your beer.

Here's some tips and a step-by-step instructional video. This puts a whole new spin on pumpkin beer.

You'll need a large pumpkin, a pumpkin carving kit or regular serrated paring knife, a plastic spigot (sometimes you can find these at Ax-Man for, like, a dime, but also most hardware stores have them), a marker, and at least a six-pack of the beer of your choice.

Start by drawing a ring around the top of your pumpkin to create the lid. Make it large enough that you can easily fit your hand inside and comfortably use a large spoon to scoop out the guts.

Poke your carving tool in the top and carve around the ring. Pop the lid off and set aside. Use a sturdy spoon to scoop out all the seeds, but don't worry if some of the pulp remains inside the pumpkin, since that will help flavor the beer.

Measure and carve out a spot for your spigot. It's best to not put it so low on the pumpkin that it's hard to fit a cup underneath. You'll probably need to prop up your pumpkin on a cake stand or something similar.

Pop in the spigot and make sure it's secure. You might have to carve down the wall of the pumpkin a bit depending on how long your spigot is.

Fill the pumpkin with beer, replace the top, and you're ready to pour. If you so desire/have the room, you can stick the whole pumpkin in the fridge to keep the beer cold.

Here's a video from Celebrations that walks you through the whole process, for all you more visual learners.
