|Surly Darkness is upon us|
Surly fans are gathering. That rumble in the distance is their thirst for the beer that inspired devotion and outrageous prices
: Darkness is upon us.
Saturday, October 27, is the annual Darkness Day at the brewery, when Surly releases its most coveted beer, Darkness, a Russian Imperial Stout. However, to call this just another beer release would be to completely underestimate the rabidness of the Surly Nation.
Last year hardcore beer fans began lining up by noon the day before the event, spending the October night in tents. This year organizers ask that fans respect their neighbors by waiting until 3:30 p.m. Friday night before setting up. Also, any tents will have to wait until nightfall. Volunteers will help manage the line, and they are are empowered to 86 anyone who doesn't follow the rules.
From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. the brewery will open and welcome fans 21 and older to drink beer, enjoy some live music, and grab some food. Before the event, 1,200 wristbands will be handed out for Darkness bottles, which will be cash only, $18 apiece, with a limit of six bottles per wristband.
Other Surly beers will be available with beer tokens, which will be for sale at $4. Regular beers will be a 12-ounce pour, while Darkness and Cask will be eight ounces.
Food trucks and carts will also be on hand to fuel the festivities. Look for Barrio, Chef Shack, and Natedogs.
Swag will also be for sale, featuring the 2012 Darkness label designed by local artist Ben Schoonover.
