Comfort me with doughnuts
It's been a wild two-year ride for the team behind the Donut Cooperative. What began as a passion for a great doughnut made with sustainable ingredients became an ambitious shop built and loved by its members.

They  launched a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising more than their $10,000 goal. Plans for an Uptown location were scrapped, and they had to head back to the drawing board. Finally, they seemed to have found an ideal spot.

In addition to the standard cake and sprinkles, they created doughnuts no one else dreamed possible -- gluten-free and vegan varieties with flavors like sangria, dark chocolate sea salt, and curried coconut lime. Today the co-op announced with heavy hearts that the ride is coming to an end.

Sunday will be its last day of business. After that it will cease production. Fans and friends are invited to stop by on their last day for casual drinks and treats.

Just a quick look around on streetview, pretty clear why this was almost doomed from the start. It's in the middle of a residential area, there is almost no other draw/traffic drivers in the immediate area.

(Yes there are exceptions) But when doing something this specific, with all of the niche donuts this place really needed to be in a place like mid-town market, or something similar where they would be guaranteed foot traffic that might just try a sustainable, free range, vegan doughnut infused with crystal power.

I'm sure they were good, but when commercial / mass appeal can't make it in the mall area of Maple Grove, a niche shop just off the beaten path??

@jes3ica at least we've still got some good donut options. A few years ago, it was a donut desert! Dessert desert?

@cmcfadden I don't even like donuts that much; I'm mostly sad because it's a block from my house.

@jes3ica ah, in the case, bummer indeed.

@AmberCollett Bummer, wonder why no one can seem to make that space work.

@secayford I have no idea--the building has such a great feel to it. Maybe too much competition from the other neighborhood spots?

@rasm that location must be cursed. Both donut co-op and cake eater were great!

@cithryth Yeah :( Although I wouldn't be surprised if another bakery-type place opened up there, haha

@rasm very true. Hopefully whoever is next can be successful though
