|Tracy's Saloon launches Festivus activities to help Second Harvest Heartland|
This week, the Seward neighborhood's Tracy's Saloon & Eatery is celebrating the holiday season with TV's favorite secular holiday tradition, Festivus. To raise food and money for Second Harvest Heartland, Tracy's has dedicated the week to the Seinfeldian holiday by offering specials that encourage guests to bring in nonperishable food items, which will be donated to Second Harvest Heartland, one of the premier food providers for Minnesota and Wisconsin food shelves, soup kitchens, and other shelters and programs.
All week long the bar is offering a free pint of Summit or glass of wine to guests who bring in five nonperishable, non-glass food items (but please, no ramen). In addition to food drive, the bar and restaurant will celebrate Festivus in full on December 23, the actual day of designation for the TV holiday. Guests will find a variety of specials and events, with 25 percent of all food sale revenues going directly to Second Harvest Heartland.
This is the first year the bar has celebrated the TV holiday, but they hope to turn it into an annual event.
Festivus was created by the father of Seinfeld writer Daniel O'Keefe as a countermeasure to his perception that rampant commercialism had overtaken the holiday season. In the show these sentiments are expressed through the character Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller), father of main character George Costanza (played by Jason Alexander), when he declares that there will be, "a Festivus for the rest of us!"
Festivus takes place on December 23 and comes with it's own special set of traditions. Some of these rituals include a Festivus dinner, the "airing of grievances" in which people express their disappointments in others, and a "feat of strength" in which the head of the household challenges one of the attendees to a wrestling match. Another notable aspect of Festivus is the Festivus pole, which takes the place of the Christmas tree.
On the 23rd of December, Tracy's Saloon & Eatery will offer its own variations on Festivus activities. It will feature a best grievance contest, a feat of strength in the form of a hot wing eating contest, and its own Festivus pole. Tracy's will also offer a $3 fuzzy navel that uses Seinfeld character Elaine's famous truth serum (peach schnapps) and one of the Soup Nazi's (another show character) soup recipes. Will there be soup for you?
The bar will donate 25 percent of all food sales on Festivus to Second Harvest Heartland and will feature $3.50 draft pints and glasses of wine. For more information, visit Tracy's Facebook Event Page
