St. Paul's newest sports bar, Bullpen Sports Saloon, is settling into its downtown location, after opening in early December. We stopped by for a look around and a bite to eat.

While Bullpen doesn't offer an extensive menu, the restaurant is a true sports bar through and through. Fans can indulge their weekend ritual by watching their game of choice on one of many TVs, all while enjoying Bullpen's self-proclaimed largest bloody Mary bar in the state--only available Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

And with Wild hockey back in action, the Bullpen hopes to get busy before games, boasting drink specials and free shuttles to Wild games at the nearby Xcel Energy Center, along with ticket and jersey raffles before some games.

Their one-page menu offers only the staples of bar food. Nachos, jalapeno bites, burgers, pulled pork, and a whole variety of hot dogs is about all you'll find at Bullpen, and no fryer in the kitchen means no French fries; you'll be getting chips with your burger. But Bullpen also throws in a couple salads, the "Cheeto Crusted Chicken Sandwich," and a unique and very tasty Olive Burger (with cream cheese and olive tapenade), infusing variety into the limited options.

The new establishment also has a full bar with 15 to 20 tap beers daily (including many craft beers), pool tables, bean bags, and video games. Topping that off is weekly Thursday night karaoke, live music most weekends, and a daily happy hour.

Bullpen Sports Saloon is at 395 Robert Street, in the old Buttery location. It's skyway-accessible and open every day from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Happy hour is Monday through Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. and 10 to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m., and all day Sunday. Specials include $3 select taps, bottles and rails; $4 craft, import, tap, bottles, and call drinks; and $5 top-shelf drinks.

My husband and i stopped in to the Bullpen last night on our way home from work. We sat at a high-top table and waited for about 10 minutes for someone to notice us. We finally went up to the bar and sat for another 10 minutes while the bartenders were eating pizza and walking around talking to each other. My husband said excuse me and we were finally acknowledged. She served us our drinks without straws... when we could flag her down to get the straws she didn't even apologize. We put in our food order and it was horrible. The whole time the staff was walking around like they had no idea what they were doing. We were never asked if we needed anything else or how are food was. When it came time to pay we ask her to run the card and she said OK- well then she had to change a keg and eat another slice of pizza before she finally gave us the credit card slip. I will never ever go back to this place again and i hope nobody else does either. My husband and I live downtown and go out pretty regularly. This is not a place we will return to or recommend anyone to go to. To top off our horrible experience- I checked my bank account this morning and we were charged twice for our tab. I called the manager and he said he had no record of it.

A sports bar...just what we needed! WOW! This is great...it's not like there are 4,000 of those in the metro area or anything. What a rarity! I just can't get over it!!! Let me get this straight - a place with a bunch of TVs everywhere, drunk d-bags yelling and screaming at said TVs and a cadre of absolute run of the mill garbage beer on tap??? Holy fuck!!! Where were you all of my life, Sports Bar? This might be love.
