The owners of Shish have taken over the former Grand Sandwich space and given it a complete overhaul. We poked our heads inside of Grand Avenue's newest restaurant by the Macalester campus.

The space has gotten a major upgrade. A beautiful bar is near the entrance, with beer taps waiting for beer. The room looks like a full-service restaurant, but the staff informed me that they are still finding their way and that the menu is likely still evolving.

An espresso systems turns out some delicious coffee drinks, and a pastry case is lined with stunning creations from Patisserie 46.

The menu, for now, is mostly soups, salads, and panini sandwiches. A Chinese-style peanut noodle salad was greasy and flat on flavor.

The Italian sandwich promised salami, prosciutto, pepperoni, ham, and gruyere. A super-crusty baguette instead held ham, cheese, and pepperoni.
It's still so early that many things are likely to change. Hopefully they get it sorted out before competition from the nearby French Meadow arrives. In the meantime, it's the best cup of coffee to be found at this end of Grand Avenue, and those pastries never disappoint.
