Loaded with love: Lobster grilled cheese at Butcher & the Boar
As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2013, coming April 17, the Hot Dish is serving up 50 of our favorite local dishes.
Downtown meatery Butcher & the Boar is a real sausage fest in many ways, but ironically the most memorable dish at Butcher & the Boar was one of the only ones they serve with no pork in it whatsoever.

This sandwich is a definite knife-and-forker, and so rich it's almost better to share it. The fun starts with two buttery-edged pieces of Texas Toast (which you can also get as a side here for sopping up gastrique, cheddar ale sauce, and serrano pesto), which get loaded up with sort of a warm lobster salad that includes several kinds of melty cheese and a scattering of chives. It sounds simple because it is. Just a handful of luxurious ingredients combined into an unabashedly, shamelessly decadent sandwich. The thick bread absorbs just enough of the creamy sauce to become pliable, but it's still sturdy enough to provide a bit of contrasting crunch.

Finishing the whole shebang with a fried egg on top is optional, but ordering this sandwich is kind of like getting in trouble: If you're going to have to suffer the consequences anyway, you might as well go all out. Doing so brings the price of the sandwich to a whopping $20 (they are generous with the lobster), making it pretty much the most expensive grilled cheese in the Twin Cities, but it's something you just have to do once. This is your culinary YOLO.
