Benjamin Carter Grimes A tasty cure-all at George and the Dragon
It's a common misconception that eating a heavy, fatty meal will "soak up" residual alcohol left in your system after a big night out. In reality that only works if you do it before you start drinking so as to delay your body's absorption of alcohol, but that's not really helpful advice if you're already suffering the aftereffects. At that point, you just have to trust in your own ritual of whatever gets you over the hump. For us, that delicious miracle cure is the aptly named Asian Hangover at George and the Dragon in Lynnhurst.
Though most of fare at G&D is inspired by traditional English pubs (think sausage rolls, Scottish salmon, toasties, and Sunday roast with plenty of mash), the restaurant's owner Fred Navarro also borrows from his own family's Filipino heritage, with items like lumpia (Filipino-style egg rolls) and a daily-changing curry dish. The two influences culminate in the Asian Hangover, a dish of fragrant Jasmine rice, shiny, garlic-flecked green beans, a piece of richly fatted Compart Family Farms pork seasoned with Chinese five-spice powder, and a fried egg. When the yolk oozes over the dish, it marries all the elements together with soothing and flavorful results.
This square meal is great for brunch, lunch, or dinner, and because of the egg, which contains the liver-cleansing chemical N-acetyl-cysteine, and the re-engergizing simple carbs from the rice, it really is a scientifically sound hangover cure. Make it part of your routine.
