Longtime Loring Park resident Joe's Garage is closing

It had a rooftop patio with a killer summer view long before everyone was slapping a deck up on a building. Joe's Garage was always a popular spot for people (and even their pooches) to bask in the sun and grab a burger. Today, via its Facebook page and Twitter account, Joe's Garage announced that its last day will be March 23. But is that the final chapter for this prime real estate?

On the Foodie File blog at Mpls/ St. Paul magazine, food editor Stephanie March reports that Jack Riebel, owner of the wildly popular Butcher & the Boar restaurant (and James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef Midwest and Best New Restaurant), will be brought in to consult on the next incarnation of the restaurant, owned by Joe Kaplan.

In an interview with Claire Stanford of Eater Minneapolis yesterday, Riebel teased that he was working on "a bar and kitchen concept. So it will be a really cool bar with great food, more of a small plate. More of a bar with food in it, not a full-service restaurant. It's going to be in Loring Park. It's an existing restaurant that we're going to rebuild and reconcept, and I'm going to consult on that."

Riebel did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Until then, close out the era by visiting the Joe's Garage website to make reservations to visit in their last week of business.

That place was terrible. The food was lousy and it's still the only place where I've ever seen a mouse scurry across the dining room. When I pointed it out to the waiter, his reaction was, "so?" Charming. Glad it's going out of business.

Their happy hour ends when I get back Downtown. Multiply that by 100+ because other places nearby or on the way still have HH after they don't.

I can't be the only person that's sick of the "small plate" dining idea.

We'll miss this place! Anxious to see what the reinvention will be, but Joe's Garage was a fave.

I'm going to miss Joe's Garage. This was one of the very first places where my wife and I had dinner when we moved to Minneapolis.

@Melissa Servais And so do you slut!
