Slip slider-ing away into the night: Primebar bids an abrupt farewell

Around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday night, word started getting around that Primebar in Calhoun Square was abruptly closing its doors for good. The chain, which is owned by Restaurants America, opened its Minneapolis outpost in the ill-fated space at the corner of Hennepin and Lake last summer. After a false start in June, business seemed to be humming along just fine, though reviews were less than stellar.

The Hot Dish received the following tip from a patron of the restaurant: "At about 9:00 p.m. they found out they were getting evicted so they told us all to pay our tabs and leave."

See also:
The restaurant did not say anything regarding the rumored eviction, but did confirm their closing publicly about an hour ago via their Facebook page, stating: "Unfortunately, we had to close our doors yesterday. We're sorry to say goodbye, and thank you all for your loyalty. We hope our paths cross again in the future."

Since restaurant conglomerate-owned Figlio and Il Gatto didn't seem to be able to make it work at this location, the question remains: What will? Something independent? The space is likely too expensive. A totally different concept? This corner really does demand a full bar with a hopping happy hour. In an area that's packed with choices, what would you like to see succeed at this corner? Take it to the comments.

Another Loring Pasta Bar would be perfect for this space! The beauty and style of the Loring Restaurants would compliment the Calhoun as no other restaurant could.

Obviously Figlio should just re-open. Makes a lot of sense to me.

A car factory. Let's get America working again!

Something cool, like an Applebees or a Fuddruckers. Uptown could really use an Olive Garden, too.

I did not like their chicken sammich.

How about an authentic Ramen noodle bar minus the sushi. A true "Noodle House" (sorry Moto-i). Kinsen failed because their food sucked. Let's bring in a real Japanese Chef who knows how to make true Japanese "street food". Not some wanna-be Chinese Chef who thinks that mayo stuffed into Sushi-rolls is "authentic" (I'm looking at you Tiger Sushi). Ramen!!  YES!!!

MAKE IT AN OUTDOOR CAFE LOOK WITH ALL THE WINDOWS OPEN, FLOWERS, SMALL TABLES, SOFT COLORS.  SMALL PLATES,  INITMATE COCKTAIL SPOTS.  MAKE IT PART OF THE ACTIVITY OF HENNEPIN AND LAKE.

You know what would work really well in that spot? A semi-dressy but casual place with an elevated central bar, with casual dining along the windows, and a separate, quiet dining room with a West Coast-style open kitchen. It could be a meeting spot for friends going to the Lagoon, or a good first date venue. Get some quality California wines, a few cocktails, some reinterpreted California-style Italian food like Pollo Mattone or calamari and some great bartenders with good personalities and.... oh, wait.

Figlio is now at West End- St Louis Park. Uptown now sucks! Come to West End St Louis Park. From Figlio ( italian) , Crave & Raku ( sushi) , Lil Sezchuan ( chinese ) , to Coopers ( Irish pub ) ... whatelse u can ask for more....:D

It's ridiculous that the building owners are charging more for rent than is sustainable, since that whole corner is a revolving door of restaurants

Maybe a local chain like Blue Plate; they know how to keep things thriving and appeal to a broad population.

With Bar Abilene fading fast, I wish Uptown had a good Taqueria / Affordable Mexican joint. That space may be too expensive, but anything other than another sushi or Thai place would be welcomed.

All of the best food trucks in town should make a cooperative restaurant there with all of their various offerings. That way it'd be local, it'd be delicious and they could start collecting alcohol revenues to help them stick around longer. Also: I vote for more pool tables and dart boards (or shuffleboard). There are enough places to just sit and drink/eat, but very few to have some fun, play games while you eat/drink. Maybe a kind of Chatterbox vibe with games.

Uptown has been pathetic for the past 10 years or so ever since all the large commercial chains tried to capitalize on the area.  They should have known hipsters and beatnics don't go for that stuff.

I've been saying this forever, I'd hate to see it happen, but Lake/Hen is basically a mall now anyway

They are going to put in an Abercrombie and Fitch

This further proves that the closing of Figlio was the biggest blunder in MPLS restaurant history.

Figlio should come back, and bring the same happy hour back with them, too.

No one can afford Calhoun Squares lease prices so it won't be a local place... Big corps need only apply.

Calhoun square needs to give up and just be a mini mall for city people. Nothing there can be hip. They should just add a Target.

I miss Lotus Vietnamese & the wonderful little Indian restaurant from the corner.

That spot would be perfect for a 24 hour Dunkin Donuts.

@612FuManChu Ha! This joke is so bittersweet because I can actually see that happening. It is hard to let go of the Uptown I grew to love in the late 90's early aughts.

@jerod.green Masu is apparently opening one up right down from Primebar's location. Masu is amazing sushi (as you likely know).
