Whether you prefer doughnuts or donuts, it's hard to nitpick over how delicious those little bits of fried dough are... especially when there are opportunities around town to get 'em for free for National Donut Day.

Started in 1938, this scrumptious national holiday was established by The Salvation Army to honor the women who brought soldiers doughnuts during WWI. (Fun fact: these ladies used to be called "Donut Lassies" and "Doughnut Dollies.") Now, the tradition of doughnut-adoration lives on, and the while we don't have Dunkin Donuts in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, we're celebrating with our own hometown treasures. Here are some of the places you can get your hands on Homer Simpson's favorite treat.

Both Glam Doll Donuts and YoYo Donuts are offering free donuts to the first 100 customers at their respective stores this morning.

For those of you who couldn't swing by early this morning, Mojo Monkey Donuts will keep the National Donut Day glory going all weekend long. They're offering a free doughnut with every 12 you buy -- making it a perfect baker's dozen. Choose your favorites from raised or cake doughnut, crullers, fritters, danishes, or bull's eye-style pastries.

This weekend, Mojo Monkey will also showcase their two newest flavors: Arnie Palmer and Very Berry. They've also hinted about a partnership with Summit Brewing Company and a new beer-flavored doughnut on the way. Beer and doughnuts? Sounds like a match made in heaven.
