|Sea Salt: Coming soon to Downtown East?|
Days after the Minneapolis City Council gave the go ahead on a massive $400 million mixed-use development proposal for Downtown East, Mayor R.T. Rybak and the Park Board stated their intention to make room in those plans for a new destination restaurant "in the spirit of Sea Salt or Tin Fish," reports the Downtown Journal.
It makes sense. Places like Tin Fish at Lake Calhoun, Bread and Pickle at Harriet, Sea Salt at Minnehaha Falls, and most recently Sandcastle at Lake Nokomis have all generated revenue (which the Park Board takes a cut of) and helped to attract visitors from all over to these respective parks and lakes. The current Downtown East development proposal contains a caveat that the city can sell a piece of the planned parkland to a private developer. That developer, in this case Ryan Cos., would then work with the city to build the space and open up the restaurant.
Park Board President John Erwin hopes that the new park would have space to include two different vendors, which is a wise decision if they decide to go ahead with their "Sea Salt-like" concept, but want to avoid Sea Salt-like lines.
