|A flight of fancy at Lift Bridge Brewing Co.|
This week's Beer of the Week is the Crosscut pale ale from Lift Bridge Brewing Co
. in Stillwater.
"The pale ale is a style that's currently overshadowed by IPAs, especially locally," says Dan Schwarz, CEO and co-owner of Lift Bridge. "But for me, it is my go-to session beer."
It's certainly lighter in body than the brewery's beloved Farm Girl saison, and it's less hoppy than many of the other brews locals seem to favor, but Crosscut took us by surprise at first sip thanks to its citrusy, grapefruit brightness and smooth, balanced drinkability.
We got some tips from Schwarz on how to pair this overlooked ale with complementary dishes.
Crosscut is made with Cascade hops, which are accentuated by adding grapefruit zest to the mix. "There is a solid hop bitterness to the Crosscut," says Schwarz. "But the finish on the beer is slightly sweet."
That's why he recommends pairing with "rich pork dishes and salads with a citrus vinaigrette." But he says it also has the potential to be an everyday, year-rounder. "It's the perfect beer to have with pizza or a burger."
Crosscut is available by the bottle in most local liquor stores and is currently on tap at Lift Bridge's taproom and Brine's Bar both in Stillwater, and at Seven Sushi
both in downtown Minneapolis.
