|The King of pumpkin ales|
Seeing as how this is All Hallows' Eve eve, we thought it only appropriate to make this week's beer of the week an unabashedly spicy pumpkin-y little number. Pumking imperial ale from Southern Tier Brewing Co
., based in Lakewood, New York, is a high ABV ale that pours a brilliant creamy orange and smells like someone dunked a piece of spice cake into a pint of beer. It tastes delicious, too, with lots of cinnamon and clove notes over a very mildly bitter base and a lingering, tangy finish.
The standard serving size for this pumpkin ale is a 12-ounce snifter, and although we could have easily enjoyed it by the pint, savoring the complexity is key to enjoying this beer.
The bold flavor of this beer is mostly a result of the mass amounts of pureed pumpkin used in the brewing process, along with caramel malt for sweetness and sterling and magnum hops for that sour-ish finish.
This is one of Southern Tier's most popular beers and has been widely distributed outside of New York since 2007. The brewery notes that this year's batch is bigger than those of the two previous years combined.
It's a seasonal favorite, so Pumking is currently on tap at lots of the Twin Cities' better beer bars, including Muddy Waters
in St. Paul, and Republic 7 Corners
. You can also pick up a six-pack and save it for Thanksgiving dinner.
