Surly Darkness Day 2013 details revealed

At Darkness Day, a happy customer is a Surly customer.
This Saturday gets us to that less-than-a-week-to-go mark before Halloween, but to hopheads everywhere Saturday is a big time holiday unto itself. What is it? Well, to paraphrase The Muppets "It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, it's time to get in line for Surly Darkness Day tonight."

The brewery will provide the beer and music, you bring the levity. Here are the details about how Darkness Day will go down and the food trucks that will be on hand with refreshments and reinforcements.

Though it's not necessary to purchase a ticket just to attend the event, the brewery will only hand out 1,500 wristbands, which you need to have in order to buy the $20 big boy bottles of Darkness. If you miss out on one of the wristbands, you can still get drink tickets for $4 apiece, but remember that this is a cash only scenario.

Officially, the party gets started at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, but you can get in line, camp out, do whatever other crazy thing you'll do for beer, as early as 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Purchase limits are instituted for wristband-havers (six per customer), but this highly sought-after brew does get snatched up fast so don't completely scoff at the idea of early arrival if you want to be certain to go home with brew.

If you're the camp-out type, diehard fan, the good news is that food trucks will be onsite early on Saturday. Caribou Coffee and Glam Doll Donuts will be serving from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Then the party will switch over to lunch and dinner stuff with Stanley's on Wheels, Scratch Food Truck, Gogi Brothers Korean BBQ, Natedogs, and Asian Invasion on hand until 5:00 p.m.

Bands play throughout the day and pretty much everyone in the lineup has a befittingly aggressive-sounding name. For the full list and more details about all the Darkness Day regulations and tips, check out the event Facebook page.

I'll skip the sitting in a long line in the freezing cold for hours just to end up not getting a wrist band and missing out on the chance to buy an extremely over priced beer. If you shake off the blinding hype surrounding Surly you will be able to see (and taste) that there are much better stouts for much cheaper and with zero hoops to jump through.

Or just buy from liquor stores... You make it seem like you can only get it at the event. That's simply not true...

@beerdontmatchthehype Exactly.  There has to be hundreds of other, better Russian Imperial Stouts available at liquor stores in the twin cities available any time of year.

Whats more is that the Twin Cities is craft beer central... It would be different if Surly were the only game in town, but kudos I guess to Surly for creating successful hype to lure the freezing dummies.
