Tux meets Tracht at GAI's annual dinner and wine event

On Saturday, the Germanic American Institute will host its annual black-tie wine tasting and dinner event. Wearing their finest, guests will stroll up to a bona fide mansion on Summit Avenue and eat like kings... or Kaisers.

The five-course dinner, prepared by Haus chef Katrin Erdmann of Hanover, includes a smoked salmon-trout terrine, herb-crusted pork tenderloin, whiskey-glazed carrots with thyme, and pan-fried semolina dumplings. For dessert, attendees will savor kaiserschmarrn, a shredded, caramelized pancake, with goat cheese parfait.

Jennifer Chou, wine connoisseur from Savvy Grape, will guide diners through the extensive variety of wines on hand for sampling throughout the evening. These include M. Chapoutier "Belleruche" Côtes-du-Rhône Rosé, from France; and later, Leitz Dragonstone Riesling from Germany.

If that sounds rather fancified, it's supposed to. Julie Elias, the event coordinator, tells Hot Dish, "It's always been a five-course meal and a fundraiser -- you know, our fancier event. But this is the first time we've tried to really push the envelope. We're really stepping it up this year."

Upgrades include a classical guitarist playing in the foyer as guests arrive, and an optional cigar and cognac aperitif after dinner.

Proceeds from the event will go toward renovating the GAI's Haus, the historic mansion at 301 Summit Avenue in St. Paul. The Haus is used for public and private events, and houses one of the only German-immersion schools in the country.

$85 members, $100 non-members
Formal attire required; black tie optional
