When Mill City Cafe closed, fans mourned the loss of this northeast Minneapolis spot, beloved for its fantastic patio, cozy ambiance, and support of local art. But now owner Mandy Zechmeister has announced that her restaurant is just about ready to reopen its doors, as the Mill Northeast, with two new chefs and a full liquor license already in place.
The kitchen will be led by Matt Kempf, who has worked all over town, including stints at both Cafe Maude locales, and Tommy Begnaud, whose resume includes time behind the burners at the late, great Town Talk Diner.
"They're referring to each other as the two-headed monster," said owner Mandy Zechmeister. "The menu that they've created is so freaking cool! It includes many of the tried and true items from the Mill City menu along with a ton of new things that will continue the evolution of Mill City Cafe into the Mill Northeast."
Although they aren't quite ready to reveal that menu just yet, what we can talk about are cocktails. They'll be sporting a full bar that will include craft cocktails, 12 taps, plenty of by-the-bottle selections, a few cans, and a tidy little wine list. Happy hour will be every day from 3-6 p.m. and will include $4 tall boys (for you Nordeast hipster types), $5 menu selections, and $6 cocktails.
It's been a long road from the shuttering of the original location in 2012 to the readying of the new incarnation of the restaurant, located on Central Avenue in the one-time Porky's location. It's the location they are actually most proud of, as they wanted the soul of the Mill to stay in Northeast. "It took way longer than anyone wanted to find and get into this space and a lot of people thought I was crazy for not looking outside of Northeast, but I was dead-set. And even though our location is different and our looks have changed, not a single thing about our hearts and passion for this community and our contribution to it has," said Zechmeister. "The support of our neighborhood has been constant and amazing."
Providing that there are no more delays, the Mill Northeast's doors should open for service next Tuesday, November 12.
Once open, the hours will be:
Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., brunch, lunch, and dinner
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m., with a limited menu from 10 to close
