100 Favorite Dishes: No. 81, Marla's doubles

As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.

The Twin Cities isn't known for Caribbean food. Here in dairy and sausage country, though, Marla's Caribbean makes a mean double on par with any street food from Marla Jadoonanan's native Trinidad.

Marla's doubles contain fried breading on both ends, sandwiching a curried chickpea filling and some scotch bonnet pepper sauce strong enough to make you sweat through your winter long johns. They blend the delicacy of a fine curry with a textured house-made bread, complemented by the sweet burn of the hot sauce.

Order it mild if you don't have the constitution for spicy -- it's still a great item with plenty of character. While often a morning food in Trinidad, Marla's doubles are often enjoyed as appetizers for any meal or as a stand-alone snack.

It sounds about perfect after shoveling the sidewalk.
