100 Favorite Dishes: No. 78, Potter's Pasties' Thai veggie pasty

As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.

Avid readers may recall that our favorite local food trend of last year was food trucks going brick-and-mortarFoxy Falafel, Smack Shack, World Street Kitchen, and Chef Shack all kicked things off nicely, but we were particularly tickled to hear that the craveable comfort of Potter's Pasties would be available any time, day or night -- even for delivery if you live in the right radius -- when the truck opened a small storefront in the late spring of 2013.

We were surprised to find them operating out of a basement space behind and below Joe's Market on Como Ave. SE, but the location and the tucked away nature of the kitchen seemed to fit their college student audience perfectly. Even more surprising was how hard we fell for the Thai veggie pasty. It seemed sacrilegious to not order a traditional, meat-n-gravy filled pie or flaky sausage roll, but the bold flavors, whole spices, and generous chunky blend of vegetables made for such a perfect foil to the rich and buttery pastry casing.

Vegetarian options can sometimes be just a dull afterthought, but the lemongrass Thai red coconut curry tossed with potatoes, carrots, spinach, and ginger is anything but. Track down the truck or stop by the basement stall today and get a big boy for $8 or a perfectly portioned smaller version for just $5.
