Soda fountain-style coffee at Five Watt, coming soon to 38th & Nicollet
After seemingly interminable construction this summer and fall, the corner of 38th and Nicollet is suddenly showing signs of new life.

The beloved Blackbird Cafe has long been the anchor of one corner, and very soon (hopefully) Kyatchi will be serving sustainable sushi just across the street. Now the Southwest Journal reports a new coffee shop called Five Watt Coffee will be opening at that very intersection in mid-January.

The shop's owners are Caleb Garn and Lee Carter, alums of Bull Run Coffee who decided to break out on their own and open an entirely new place powered by a "less is more" philosophy.

The duo has enlisted Wisconsin-based Kickapoo Coffee as their roaster and supplier, largely because of the company's eco-conscious business practices. Kickapoo works mostly with small farms and is committed to using biodegradable packaging, something that Five Watt's owners felt was important.

Garn and Carter are keeping it even more local for their purveyors of pastry and tea. Seward's Verdant Tea will be providing the stems, leaves, and special blends, and nearby neighbor Patisserie 46 will be bringing in the sweets.

Five Watt says its focus will be on uniquely flavored drinks, quality coffee, and customer interaction. No aloof baristas here.
