Homemade Tom & Jerry: A drink of the week for the homebound

When it comes down to the brass tacks of spending the holidays at your childhood home, let's face it: It's not all decking the halls in your finest gay apparel, caroling, and carrying on. It's also soul-crushing traffic, tiny twin beds, or struggling to wrap anything other than a square box (we still don't get it). For this, and for the good times, let's create something decadent and full of booze to mark the passing of this crazy season. From the comfort of your parent's living room, enjoy a homemade take on the classic Tom & Jerry.
A punch that has remained long dormant, and a close relative of eggnog, Tom & Jerry is an egg- and milk-based tipple, originally popular in America in the early 19th century. But, hey, if you're from the Midwest, we don't need to tell you what a Tom and Jerry is! Chances are, your elders have lying in the attic an antique punch bowl specifically suited to this wintery drinking occasion, complete with festive red and green lettering.
Dedicated punch bowl or no, you can still indulge in this oft-overlooked tradition: We've scoured recipes aplenty and come up with a formula you can follow with only the most basic of ingredients -- because there is no way you're going out in that cold again, not for fancy blackstrap rum, or fresh nutmeg to grate. If you've got a couple of eggs and some whole milk, make do with the rest and experiment. The result will still be warm, spicy, creamy and perfectly suited to sipping in your post-holidays haze.
Tom & Jerry
What you need:
3 eggs, separated
3 tablespoons superfine or powdered sugar
½ tsp each ground allspice, cinnamon, cloves
4 oz. each slightly warm brandy and spiced rum
Hot whole milk
Nutmeg for garnish, freshly grated if you can swing it
Hand beater or stand mixer for beating egg whites
Festive mugs, pre-warmed
Beat egg yolks until light yellow, and then add your sugar and spices. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites (with your hand mixer or stand mixer) until they hold stiff peaks, adding a pinch of cream of tartar if you have it to aid in the stiffening. Gently fold the yolk mixture into the whites. Divide your batter between four warmed mugs, and then add an ounce each of brandy and rum. Fill each mug with hot milk, stir gently to combine, and dust with nutmeg for the perfect cup of cheer.
