As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.
Sonora Grill may be known for their savory bocadillos (sandwiches) and heavenly caramelos (tacos), but they're stretching out in their new roomier digs on East Lake Street, and the expanded menu has allowed these inspired chefs to delve into other areas of Latin cuisine. This irresistible plate of Argentinian-style empanadas is enough to draw ravenous eaters from all over the metro area.
The basis for all great pie, be it savory or sweet, is a good dough. Sonora Grill's hits the mark: Tanned to crunchy perfection, it shatters into little flakes of fat and flour with each bite, but there's still enough heft to the chew to add a little substance.
The filling is a lightly spiced beef, and a swipe of green pesto-like salsa adds just enough acidity to brighten up each bite. Fluffy shreds of aged, salty cheese, melt into the emerald herbs making each bite wonderfully balanced.
