100 Favorite Dishes: No. 53, Filfillah's shawarma

When in search of some scrumptious Middle Eastern grub, it really seems to be word of mouth we rely on. Filfillah Market and Restaurant in Columbia Heights is no different. Their shawarma is some of the best you'll find in town -- if you're one of the lucky ones in the know.
Shawarma is slow-cooked lamb, beef, or chicken, served with rice and pita bread -- almost like a gyro. It's usually served as a platter or in a wrap. Simple enough, but this dish varies greatly depending on how the meat is prepared. At Filfillah, the meat is cooked fresh every day, and never frozen. The result is tender, flavorful, but not over-seasoned meat.
The rice pilaf isn't too shabby either. The best bite you'll get is half rice, half meat. Or pack both into the pita bread to eat shawarma the traditional way.
So whether you're a fan of the ethnic dish or just looking to expand your palate, take our word and stop by Filfillah. Both the chicken and lamb/beef shawarma plates are only $11, and we're sure that only a few bites will have you spreading the word too.
