Sawatdee closes skyway location [UPDATE]

Sawatdee closes two express locations

Late last week we learned in a report from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal that Sawatdee had closed a second of its eight locations.

The two shuttered locations, both in Minneapolis, include the Uptown location, which closed about six months ago, and the Baker Center Skyway location, which closed over the holidays. Both were Sawatdee Express locations, which served as the company's fast casual dining model and focused primarily on takeout.

Since opening in 1983, Sawatdee has been a Twin Cities Thai dining institution. The company's remaining six locations are all full-service dining, and are still open. According to a representative, "The express model in the Uptown location was simply not viable. For the skyway location, we just closed over the holidays because we were unable to renew our lease. We hope our skyway express customers will utilize our Minneapolis restaurant location for delivery or lunch buffet."

And in a post on the restaurant's Facebook page, the company said, "We're all bummed that our Sawatdee Express Skyway location is now closed. But come to our full-service Minneapolis location for lunch buffet ($9.95 in-house or $8.95 to go) for an awesome lunch. And we have delivery too."

Last time I went to sawadee was the only time with good service. Food is expensive too.

Ordered Pad Thai from the Skyway location once because I figured, "How on earth can a Thai spot mess up Pad Thai?" Sure enough, it was awful. I'm sure they'll blame the food trucks for this though.

I loved the Uptown location many years ago. Last time I went was to the warehouse spot during the lunch hour. There were three woman(waitresses) doing their hair, curling iron and all at the end of the bar. Then, my curry had a hair in it. We will never know who's hair it was but I never went back.

I ordered lunch from the Baker Center skyway location twice. HORRIBLE food each time. There was never anyone in the store, even during downtown lunch rush proving it was a failing location. With the closing of True Thai in Seward, I'm not sure where we are supposed to get fabulous Thai food now. Bummer.

Been to maple grove twice. What do you think Kari? Food was marginal, horrible experience with service and environment.

The Uptown location was not good. I'm not sure what happened as far as management is concerned, but it deserved to close.

Checkout BiteSquad, if you haven't already, they might have something even better in your area.

Yeah uptown closed about a year ago. Shame. Excellent quick food with nice employees.

The Maple Grove location is awful - just check out the rating in Yelp.
