100 Favorite Dishes: No. 46, Band Box Diner's Lunch Box burger
A little white building with red trim decorates a triangular street corner in Elliot Park. There's nothing fancy about it, but the Band Box Diner has been a staple of Minneapolis for nearly 75 years.
One menu item stands out among the specialty breakfasts and burgers served all day here: the Lunch Box burger. The real way to make a meal out of a burger, this one is plated with most of the sides piled right on (or under) the Angus beef patty.
Best Diner 2013 - Band Box Diner
Creamy, tart coleslaw is the first ingredient placed on the grilled bun, followed by the 1/3 pound burger and melted cheese, followed by the best part -- homemade shoestring fries, and lots of them. We ate most of them on the burger, but pulled a couple off to the side to try solo.
What's really cool is that the Band Box sees the importance in food sourcing. They use local ingredients whenever possible. We found out that bun we just ate came from the Franklin Street Bakery, just down the road. So, not only have they spent 75 years perfecting the Lunch Box burger, they've been doing it with quality ingredients. At only $8.50, there's no reason not to give this burger a go.
