James Beard Award semifinalists were announced today

They call them the Oscars of the food world, a chance to recognize the finest in the culinary industry. The 2014 James Beard Award semifinalists were announced this morning, and several local chefs and restaurants were recognized.

- In the running for Best Chef Midwest are the Bachelor Farmer's Paul Berglund, Tilia's chef and owner Steven Brown, Piccolo's chef and owner Doug Flicker, Salty Tart's Michelle Gayer, Sea Change's chef de cuisine Jamie Malone, and Heartland Restaurant and Farm Direct Market's grand mastermind, Lenny Russo. 

- Past Best Chef Midwest-winner Isaac Becker of 112 Eatery is a contender in the Outstanding Chef category. 

- Steve Horton of Rustica is in the running for Best Pastry Chef. 

- Restaurant Alma is a semifinalist for the Outstanding Service award. 

- The drink mixing masterminds at Marvel Bar are semifinalists for Outstanding Bar Program.
