As a countdown to the Best of the Twin Cities 2014, coming April 16, the Hot Dish is serving up 100 of our favorite local dishes.
|A loaded lunch|
We wouldn't normally advocate ordering a grilled cheese sandwich at a restaurant. They're often overpriced and always seem to taste better when they're made at home and eaten immediately, preferably from the comfort of one's couch. But the Mona grilled cheese is in a different league altogether. In fact, we aren't really sure it's fair to call it grilled, but it's definitely cheesy.
Mona's chef Lisa Hanson offers this waffle iron-pressed sandwich at lunchtime only, but we have it on good authority that if you ask nicely, or are under the age of 12, they'll make it for you at dinner, too. It has three different melty cheeses, chopped sun dried tomatoes, scallions, a smear of roasted garlic béchamel sauce, and the clincher ingredient: a fistful of crushed potato chips. If you like a little meat with your cheese, be sure to add some of the house bacon, which is thick, chewy, and made right on site. It's well worth the $1.50 upgrade.
