Yesterday, Hot Dish posted a photo of men dressed in SS uniforms and surrounded by Nazi flags at Gasthof's German restaurant in northeast Minneapolis. Last night, more photos from the event surfaced.

A Reddit user commenting on a thread about the Nazi-themed dinner party held at Gasthof's shared additional photos of the event.

The user, "trrpsl," first posted the group photo above, which shows the same scene depicted in the initial photo on a larger scale. The picture is blurry, but clearly shows four Nazi flags and an Austrian flag draped on Gasthof's walls.

Two hours later, "trrpsl" posted another photo (below) in response to a user who asked to see the party from another angle, since a number of City Pages commenters were claiming that members of re-enactment groups portraying Allied powers were also present.

gasthofs2.jpg

City Pages received the initial photo from an anonymous reader who says a friend sent it to him.

According to Jon Boorom, a WWII re-enactor, the photo was taken at an annual Christmas party that has been celebrated by local German re-enactment groups for the past 16 years, but only at Gasthof's for the past six.

Mario Pierzchalski, the owner of Gasthof's, has declined to speak about the incident.

Here's some previously unreleased photographs of Mr. Steben at his finest that you all will probably be very interested in.  In the first picture, you'll see an ex-member of his group posing in front of a Nazi flag at the Gasthof zur Gemütlichkeit in January 2009.  This man's name is Shane Thede and he's an ex-Marine Neo-Nazi who was a former member of Mr. Steben's group the 12th SS.  One time at a reenactment Mr. Thede was changing and I noticed that he had a large swastika tattooed on his chest and a picture of Kurt Panzermeyer tattooed on his arm if I remember correctly.  In the second photo, you'll see a picture of Mr. Steben reenacting the holocaust with an armload full of naked baby dolls.  If you look closely you'll notice that he's wearing an SS saucer cap and he's standing in front of a gate which I guess is supposed to signify the gate of a concentration camp.  In the third picture you'll see a disturbing picture of Mr. Steben in all his freakish glory.  You'll notice that he's got 666, a swastika, and a penis written on his forehead in black magic marker with a psychotic look on his face.   And finally, the fourth picture is a mugshot of Mr. Steben taken by the Plymouth Police Department.  Mr. Steben says that he conducts background checks on all the members of his unit but in reality the guy who did the background checks for his unit in the past named Dave Pomplun who works for the court system had enough of his bullshit and left the unit.  Furthermore, Shane Thede is proof that he had at least one Neo-Nazi in his group and at the Gasthof zur Gemütlichkeit.  About three to four years ago Mr. Steben sold t-shirts with Satanic and National Socialist themes and he got alot of criticism for selling the shirts but he decided to keep on selling them despite the criticism because he cared more about money and being a shock jock than his unit's reputation and holocaust victim's sensitivities.  He sold many shirts that glorified National Socialism, the holocaust, and Satanism.  Some of the shirts could be explained away simply as unit t-shirts but others straight up glorified National Socialism, the holocaust and Satan.  Mr. Steben used to have an extremely disturbing and demonic drawing on his Facebook account which portrayed Jesus Christ disemboweled at the Last Supper Table with Satan at the head of the table apparently triumphing over Jesus.  He also had an illegal and unregistered fully automatic German assault rifle (STG-44) confiscated from him by the BATF several years ago.  He frequently gets drunk and obnoxious at his events and during one event down in Rockford, Illinois a few years ago his son Devin was in a drunken stupor and either fell or was pushed onto an original German Zeltbahn worth the better part of $500 doing hundreds of dollars worth of damage to it and they refused to own up to it or offer any sort of compensation whatsoever to the victim.  I think Scott is mentally ill and needs some major psychological and/or spiritual help.

I mentioned before that I do not have a problem with reenactments. I don't have a problem withe them having dinner after the reenactment in the period uniforms (well maybe a little). I just don't understand what they are reenacting at the restaurant? Why have the swastikas hanging? Are they reenacting a nice meal after "pacifying" a village? Please understand that such things are illegal in Europe. I understand that this is America and all but you have to understand that there are still a lot of people whose family members were killed by that regime and seeing those symbols brings back tragic memories.

The Civil War reenactments take place on a battlefield. Have these so called "actors" done the same?

fightback

If you want to teach people about WW2 then why not have all sides in the reenactment, US, British, Italian, and other countries as they have participated in these events as well. If that was the case, then I would be compelled to visit the reenactment myself. But this is one sided.

fightback

If this was a reenactment why were the servers so uncomfortable? If it was a reenactment why would one of these guys say to a server: 'Oh we can make the perfect babies together because you're German and I'm German.'" Is this something that you want to teach? Why doesn't Mario have a different theme like WW1 or the Civil War. Disgusting.

I'm a liberal who loves history and goes to many historical reinactments, and I can tell you there is nothing to worry about here.

Reinactors play a very important part of the laymens understanding of history. These hobbiest, and some professionals, do this for a love of history! I know for a fact, they take turns going to events dressed as the Bad Guys, because who wants to hang our all day, dressed as a German SS officer, at a family friendly USA air show?? (the answer is no one)

Most of these reinactors share a love of history and are veterans. They may have actually fought and killed the people they are portraying. They deserve our respect.

THE BOTTOM LINE ABOUT IT IS THIS (I POSTED AND IT GOT REMOVED SO HERE IT IS AGAIN)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALL YOU SO CALLED PATRIOTIC PEOPLE WHO CELEBRATE EVERY JULY 4TH ARE "NO" DIFFERENT THAN THAN THIS DELUSIONAL GROUP OF HUMANS (if they were actors...so  what; doesn't change the fact). THIS COUNTRY WAS "STOLEN" FROM THE NATIVE AMERICANS...PERIOD!!!!! MILLIONS WERE MURDERED, RAPED, POISONED, AND INFECTED WITH DISEASE, AND YOU WANNA POINT FINGERS AT THE NAZI'S!!!! NOT TO MENTION THE "THOUSANDS" MAYBE EVEN MILLIONS OF CHINESE MEN WHO WERE BROUGHT HERE TO BUILD THE U.S. RAILROADS ONLY TO BE, BLOWN UP STARVED, OR JUST PLAIN KILLED. CONDEMN THEM...CONDEMN YOURSELVES TOO...YOU ARE "ALL" FVCKED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't see what the big deal is.  From what I hear from Mario, these are nice guys who are really into reenactments...exactly like the civil war reenactors.  Do the guys dressed up in confederate garb get such criticism?  I think not.  Just sounds like WWII is still too soon for most people. Even though I detest the REAL Nazi's, they are a part of our history and in this country we have something called freedom.

Lay off Mario and Gasthof's.  He sure didn't try doing anything wrong here and so many people are blowing this out of proportion.

That's so cool! I never thought about a Nazi dinner party before. I might do something like this soon.

Would anyone be this up in arms if they were WWII Soviet reenactors? Or WWII Italian reenactors? What about Imperial Japanese reenactors? Take the flags away at this dinner and would everyone still have the same reaction? I'm just curious if any of you would.

lawren_lawren
lawren_lawren

This kind of behavior is text book. It's similar to numerous "historical" groups who are reclassifying unlawful behavior by using historical preservation as an excuse. This is a very common way to justify inequality. Unfortunately the law isn't as ambiguous as this establishment is implying it is. Displaying the swastika and celebrating with Nazi gear in a public establishment without any historical association or context is advocating the practice of ethnic superiority. The arguments in this blog are alarmingly ignorant.

It's one thing enacting a war time episode, it's another when a group of people enacting Nazi Germany.  We should boycott this place - If this was for allied troups as well where is the British, French, American flags.  This is sick!  Someone should email the owner and tell them to f*ck off back to Germany.

Oh yeah! Let's have some reenactment of racial and extremist military culture. Stage A "little rock 9" perpetrator/a block party or maybe do some klu klux clan reinaxtment "fun costume parties" at a fancy German restauraunt? So many choices.. So few people of integrity.

@fightback They do their even in may is my favorit one to go to. They have a US ww2 tank at that one my son loves. Its just this event was manly for the individuls that did germen renactoring. They dont talk about it much because hating on people sells news but there was 2 other countries represented at this event.

@fightbackI just have a few comments on this: 1) Mario did not personally put together and host the event, nor partake, nor is he an educator responsible of said events. He only opened a venue for a private party to be held which is what he owns/operates a business to do. He is not responsible for others' actions or what they say, etc...  2) If a WWI or Civil War group approached him to have an event at his venue I am sure he would have gladly done so. 3) Mario is actually Polish. He is also a very sincere, nice, non Nazi man. While I agree that Nazi parties are in poor taste I 100% disagree that Mario as a person, or Gasthof's as a venue are in anyway disgusting and I wish more people would see the distinction.

@OttotheComic @OttotheComic They may deserve your respect, so I'll leave you to it. The reason I believe these people know that this is questionable behavior (understatement of the year), is because at Civil War reenactments I don't think you see slaves being whipped and hung from trees. And I hope you don't see Jews and gays standing beside gas chambers at a reenactment like this one. That's all part of the history too isn't it? So why don't they include it in their show? And as to your "bad guys" defense, how would that play out at a Calvary vs. Native Americans historical reenactment? Please tell us, who was the "bad guy"? Bottom line for me is if you're doing something with a group that can be interpreted as homophobic, racist, mysogynistic, etc., and it takes you 3 news stories and 5 paragraphs of print to explain it, it's probably not a good idea. And I have to ask, have you read the Ghastof's employees comments about these events. It's absolutely horrible. One employee was asked if he was German, he replied that he was Polish, and the reenactor said 'well it's water under the bridge now.' But to the German female server he said that 'we can make good German babies.' Surely these servers aren't part of the "show."

@Megalomac I'm going to form a reenactment group. We're going to dress as Sunni Muslims and reenact 9/11. Want to join?

@Megalomac Do you know Mario? Why hasn't he said that it was a reenactment in this article? Why does Mario decline further comment on the party's intentions? Something is not right here.

Hello Jake: If Stalin was the center of attraction in a reenactment and presented the same way here, I think people would be up in arms. He was even worse than Hitler. If you had a reenactment of the Japanese dictatorship and Commander Mitsuo Fuchida was represented, I do believe that it would cause a problem. It all depends on how it is delivered. The Nazi's closed door dinner on MLK day seems awfully prejudice and not coincidental either. If a dinner is open to the public, then I think people would know that the reenactments are a teaching tool. The Italians sided with whoever was winning the war as far as I know, so it may not cause as much of a problem. But who knows for sure.

buckshotmagoo3
buckshotmagoo3

I just struggle to think of a reason why people would dress up in Nazi attire and hang Nazi flags on the wall in a restaurant closed to the public (on MLK Day, no less). It's one thing to do it on a battlefield where the purpose is to educate people or on stage or in front of a camera for entertainment purposes, it's another to do it in your free time without an audience.

The owner is a Polish immigrant...the Nazi's invaded his country and executed over half of the Polish army's officers in a single afternoon. Many Poles were placed in Nazi concentration camps for various reasons...if he isn't offended, I think the reality is that these are a bunch of guys with an offbeat hobby and not members of the American Nazi Party. I don't believe that their interest in the Wermacht (German army) provides any evidence that they are white supremacists. I can't get down with their idea of a good time, but short of them making statements about such beliefs, you can't just assume that is their agenda.

While I dont support the "hipster" lifestyle, they exist. If you care to drink your own negative poison in the attempt to kill them off, have fun. Accept other cultures and ideas otherwise you will die an ignorant, hating man.

Hating other's beliefs will not help a cause but harm you while the fight you are battling remains unchanged.

@southernsistah Whoah - someone's racist and a bit odd.  Reenactment groups reenact wars, not acts of terror.  You may not know your history, so I'll remind you, WWII was a big war with 2 major groups, the Allies and the Axis.  The Civil War had the North and the South.  Both wars are easy to reenact due to the obvious difference between the powers.

I don't know how I could have been more clear on my feelings of the real Nazi's.  You and I don't know anything about these reenactors of the latest great war.  Before you start making accusations about them or the restaurant owner, maybe you should get a bit more information.

@fightback I'm guessing mario isn't saying much because people have been threatening him and his restaurant. Which is kind of funny how these reenactors or extreamly freindly and are all history buffs doing something peace full but all these other people hating on them are threating to harm a inesent man and burn down his restaurant.

@fightback @Megalomac @southernsistah True that.  I guess I just assumed they actually do battlefield reenactments and are friendly with the allied reenactors as well.  I do wish Mario would have explained this a bit more...he probably hopes this will all blow over, but being up-front is usually the best option.

fightback

@Megalomac @southernsistahReenactments should be done on a battlefield as well. I would like to know more of this story. It seems as if this was just a closed door event, then I would say it is not a reenactment at all. You are correct. More info. is needed in order to come to any conclusions.

fightback
fightback

@smsak @fightbackWouldn't you think that he would set people straight by saying that this is just a reenactment so people do not become offended? If he stays silent then he sets himself up for failure. I wish there was more of an explanation for all of this. Thanks.
