South Minneapolis's 5-8 Club named number one on Travel Channel's Chowdown Countdown
It appears as though Minneapolis's legendary cheese-stuffed burger is making mouths water on the national stage yet again. The Travel Channel has named the 5-8 Club number one on its newest list of places to chow down in the United States.

On a show called Chowdown Countdown, now in its second season, the Travel Channel breaks down its list of the best 101 places to eat across the country -- and they've bestowed top honors to the 5-8 Club. Other eateries in the top 10 include Tony Luke's in Philadelphia, Prince's Hot Chicken Shack in Nashville, and Pink's in Los Angeles.

Minneapolis's 5-8 club originally opened in 1928 as a speakeasy
We had a chance to talk with Jill Skogheim of the 5-8 Club, who was understandably thrilled with the news. "We found out about a week ago," she said. "This was about the hardest secret we've ever had to keep."

"I think they chose the 5-8 because of the really great burger in the classic American Juicy Lucy. That in combination with the atmosphere and the history of the 5-8 Club as a speakeasy," she added.

The 5-8 Club opened back in 1928 as an illegal speakeasy and has been operating in south Minneapolis ever since. It was in the early 1950s that the restaurant added the now iconic Juicy Lucy to its menu.

Shh... Let Travel Channel tell folks that. It might keep the food tourists away from the places we really like.

Just goes to show that you should not believe everything you see on tv.

Having ate at both 5-8 and matts many times, I would pick matts any day of the week. The burgers at 5-8 seem to have little to no seasoning and even their juicy Lucy comes off plain tasting to me. And that's significant coming from someone with a Minnesota pallette.

Last year, on a visit to Minneapolis, I went To Matt's and the 5-8 club on successive days, getting the Juicy Lucies. Matt's was too runny and grossly under-seasoned. I found the service there was pretty bad. The 5-8 club was perfect and so was the service. But the big difference is that the 5-8 has lots of other items. Then, of course, there are the fried pickles!

Same here. I went there one time with my dad. Had their version and wasn't impressed. Plus the service wasn't that great, either. Pretty disappointing.

Pfft!!!! Matt's Bar is ten times better than the 5-8!

The top three burgers of my life have been at the Birchwood. Well raised, healthy beef=delicious food. This is crazy.

It's good but it's no Matt's and definitely not In-N-Out

Poor service, not very good burgers. This is total bs.

I can’t understand how this was named number one??? I have eaten at the 5:8 once, only because i wanted to compare it to matt's bar and we had a coupon. I was extremely disappointed; this is saying a lot because I never post comments and could typically give a shit either way. We had no problem with the service but the food was poor quality and extremely overpriced!! (Even w/ the coupon) funniest thing I have heard all week!!

I will admit that everyone is entitled to their own opinion on who has the best Jucy Lucy. That is, unless that opinion is the 5-8 Club. Their burgers are horribly seasoned, the wait and overall service are terrible, and the inside of that place makes Applebee's look good by comparison.

Mediocre bar food at best. Minnesota has hundreds of places better than this

Kinda disappointed, since I had my first Juicy Lucy at Matt's.

This also coming in hot off the presses from Travel Channel via City Pages' ever-sharper cutting edge: America's favorite condiment is Ranch dressing, best comedy on television is 2 Broke Girls, funnest date is (duh) Mall of America, and most beloved musician is George Thorogood.

hmm must not have gotten the plastic wrapper from the cheese in the middle of their burger like I got....

The Travel Channel choosing 5-8 simply means they don't like their burgers seasoned.

Forget about it having the best Jucy Lucy (it doesn't), there are hundreds of better places in the Twin Cities alone.

Lol. Ok, can we all just agree that: 1) it's cool that the number one place is in our city 2) people have different opinions and tastes

Well their service is trash and their food is terrible. City pages should know better than to post these lies to people

No I was there yesterday. The entire experience was awful.

The fact that so many people are so loyal to a damn cheeseburger really speaks volumes about our community as a whole.

wow. other than the malt shop, the most disappointing, blah burger in town.

The 5-8 isn't even the best place to chow down on Cedar Avenue...

Hundreds, in the Twin Cities alone? Don't you think that might be a slight exaggeration?

I can't believe I'm defending City Pages, but, they are just reporting, it was the Travel Chanel that nominated the 5-8 Club as #1!
