Kim Bartmann, the restaurateur behind Bryant Lake Bowl, Pat's Tap, Barbette, and Red Stag, has a new Loring Park restaurant in the works, Eater Minneapolis reported last Tuesday.

A tipster informed the publication that a proposal for this week's Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission's public hearing was listed by Domain Architecture and Design on Bartmann's behalf for the space at 1612 Harmon Place, which formerly housed Café Maude at Loring.

The proposal, which went before the the committee on Tuesday night, requested permission to replace the storefront windows and a door at the rear of the building. The proposal to replace the windows was approved, but the committee will hold off on making a decision about the rear door until next month.

The new restaurant will reportedly be called Bauhaus Restaurant, referring to the art and architecture style that emerged from the German Bauhaus school of the early 1900s. (Coincidentally, there is also a brewery of the same name opening in Northeast, Bauhaus Brew Labs.)

In a letter sent to the Heritage Committee regarding the proposal, Domain Architecture and Design addressed past difficulties with opening and maintaining businesses in the Loring Park space.

"The use proposed is [a] restaurant called the Bauhaus. Previous restaurants have failed at this location, and we are determined to understand why that is and propose a couple of alterations that are intended to maintain the prosperity of this historic structure," they wrote. "We appreciate the Minneapolis HPC staff meeting on site for discussions regarding this beautiful building. We have the same goal; to preserve the historic nature and intent of building for the future generations; we are looking at the building from an economic sustainability perspective and we believe they are compatible."
