It's National Donut Day: How to celebrate in the Twin Cities

Bogart's Doughnut Co. in south Minneapolis has been selling out all week.

Cream-filled, sugar-crusted, powdered, or glazed, we want our donuts and we want them today. It's National Donut Day, and lucky for us, the Twin Cities is the place to be for these rich, sugary delights.

If you're just waking up, we have one caveat: This beloved national holiday isn't exactly a secret, so area donuts have been selling like hot cakes. Hot, delicious cakes with icing and fillings and soft, melt-in-your-mouth dough.

A couple of local shops are celebrating the day with specials, but mostly they're just trying to keep up with the demand.

Glam Doll Donuts is serving a Donut Day special: The Dani's Double Dee-lite comes with peanut butter cream filling, fresh raspberry icing, and is topped with a house made soft peanut brittle.

Bogart's Doughnut Company will be celebrating by making extras of their brioche donuts filled with butter cream and Nutella. This new shop has been selling out all week so get in early, because once they're sold out, they're out.

A Baker's Wife will be making donuts throughout the day to stay in stock. So far this morning customers have been buying four or five dozen at a time. We recommend the classic cinnamon sugar cake donut.

Granny Donut in St. Paul was similarly slammed with customers when we checked in. If you get there in time, we're particularly fond of the crispy apple fritter.

Pop in to your local favorite and see for yourself, but be prepared for a wait. You'll find our recommendations on the best donuts in the Twin Cities here.

Well you can joke all you want but.... for close to 20 years I took my kids to the Grand Ave, Bakery every Saturday over at 38th and Grand. Bread, cakes, donuts, pies you name it. Now I live in the Hi-Lo mountain country of New Mexico. There ain't a bakery within 50 miles or 2 mountain ranges that's half of what was in every neighborhood on the South Side back in the day. I used to deliver donuts from out bakery all over No. Mpls until the early '70's. Count your blessings, you are where you are supposed to be. Minneapolis is, and can be again. a great city.

There are so many innuendos and jokes that can be made from these "cream filled" comments about a Baker's Wife, a Granny Donut, and so forth. AND this picture. Sorry, I'm a child.

So where can I still get quality donuts at 6PM?

You do realize that a "Top 10 List" is created with the mentality that some things are better than others, for very specific reasons, right? You act as if you've never read any food critic columns before. The fact that she explained *why* some establishments are better than others is simply being opinionated with reason. You on the other hand seem to have no backing to your argument whatsoever (having an opinion and reasons to support = a lack of class??), so please, stop cheapening Minneapolis/St.Paul with your poorly thought out ideas and loud mouthed behavior.

Classless and Shoddy behavior? Excuse me? I think that your name calling is little bit shoddier and less classy than my valid OPINION on BAKERIES. Settle down now.

This is all very helpful, but which shop will let me carry my rifle around?

Glam Doll would be better if they had better customer service and didn't act totally standoffish and disinterested in even selling anything.

Yeah definitely check them out if you're into looking at empty racks and then picking the one donut they have available, and then getting shafted on the free donut with coffee purchase (for national donut day) because you weren't paying attention when they rung you up.

Skip Glam Doll and Bogart's; pretty "meh", especially for the price. Definitely hit up A Baker's Wife, Granny Donut, and SugaRush!
