UPDATE: Target's first-ever Minnesota liquor store opened in Otsego in October 2014.

Target is already your one-stop shop when you need a tennis racket, a puppy purse, and string cheese -- now you can add booze to the cart. Starting July 1, a Minnesota Target store will have a license to sell alcohol.

According to Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, the City Council of Otsego approved an application for a liquor store to be stationed at one of the city's Super Targets.

Until now, Target has only carried beer with a percent-alcohol-by-volume maximum of 3.2 in a select number of the chain's 75 Minnesota locations.

While the liquor license is limited to the Super Target in Ostego and lasts for only one year, this means they will be allowed to sell not only high-alcohol beer and wine for the first time ever, but liquor as well.

Minnesota grocery stores require the liquor store entrance and checkout to be separate from those of the food section, meaning that Target will most likely have to add an addition to the store.

Target spokesperson Erica Julkowski says the corporation chose Otsego's location based on the store's design. She could not say whether liquor licenses will spread across other Minnesota locations, but did say the call for a liquor section came from Minnesota shoppers.

Since 1996, wine, beer, and liquor have become available in over 1,300 Targets across 37 states. Could Minnesota be number 38?

Neat. I wonder if the Moms against Guns who are trying to boycott Target unless they tell law-abiding citizens that they can't carry pistols in the stores will also threaten to boycott if they start selling booze. Little Tommy and Jenny shouldn't be exposed to drunkards stumbling in to Target looking for their traveler of Windsor, ya know.

Don't forget about the drunk bastards coming and going out of the parking lot. Get ran down. Priorities are all fucked up with these loons. Booze at Target would be a bigger threat to the public safety than law-abiding citizens who carry permitted pistols. Go figure.

Target sells booze in Iowa. The prices and selection are not very competitive

Just be prepared to duck and cover before & after getting your brew. That's assuming you can even check out. After that, you should check on your credit card to make sure it's not compromised.

Target likes to make it easy for you, the customer.

I thought Target " cared" about the community. Thus they quite selling smokes long ago. Guess they care more about the profit this will now bring.

As a native Minnesotan who moved to Northern California after finishing at the U of M a mere 45 years ago, I was shocked to find beer, wine and liquor in EVERY grocery store--and being sold on Sundays, too! Now I am shocked when I return to the land of my birth and discover I cannot buy alcohol products in the grocery store and the wine & liquor stores are closed on Sunday! Two "blue" states with incredibly different opinions on what is freedom and liberal! And for those who think selling alcohol leads to "questionable" customers, get a life. They are people too! Yes, perhaps with problems, but they are people too!

If their selection is the same as it is in Illinois Target's , liquor stores have nothing to worry about. It is beyond bland in beer wine and spirits

Are you 10? The "Ickies"? Grow up! There are not going to be zombie like hoards of drunk homeless people tearing apart every target in the Minnesota as soon as they start selling alcohol!!! You're post is pure ignorance!!!

Be use there's no cub, costco SAMs or trader joes on Nicollet

Danielle Henkels

I don't get people's reactions to this. Cub, Costco, Sam's and Trader Joe's all have grocery/liquor. What's the difference if Target does too? It already sells it in other states that allow it and this will not take away from the little local anymore than any other place that is big and sells in volume does.

The city of Otsego completely screwed over 2 liquor stores within walking distance of thus Target! Why is this not an issue????

i agree. especially since the targets that i've been to that sell liquor don't even have good deals on their liquor selections. it will be convenient for shoppers that only want to go to one place, but the people that enjoy their local liquor shops with great sales and better selections will still be happy at their usual stores.
