New Belgium and Odell collaborate on a summery pale ale

This week we're sipping FOCOllaboration, an American pale ale with a copper color and a thin but consistent head. The joint project of New Belgium and Odell Brewing, FOCOllaboration Ale is one of the best beers we've had recently from this pair of the biggest and brightest names in Fort Collins, CO.

The beer is easy and pleasing, with a floral aroma that contains a hint of citrus zest and an herbal background. The beer itself is light and buttery on the mouth, starting with a caramel note in the malt and finishing with a dominant but balanced hop-forward focus (55 IBU). The billowy beer gives a smooth, dry finish with the hops coming forward at the nose.

New Belgium and Odell are located within one mile of one another in "the Beermuda Triangle of Fort Collins Brewing" and have been brewing commercially since 1991 and 1989 respectively.

For Beer Week this year, the many breweries in Fort Collins came together to tackle collaborative projects. Within that greater community-inspired work, the partnership between New Belgium and Odell was born and they decided to take it a step further. "We've been neighbors for decades and we've always had a ton of mutual respect," says New Belgium's Bryan Simpson. "It just made sense for two of the longest-running Fort Collins breweries to collaborate."

They wanted a summer beer to fit the season and felt a pale ale would highlight both breweries well. FOCOllaboration was released on June 2 and is available locally at Longfellow Grill, Shamrock's, The Local, Stinson Wine, Beer & Spirits, and France 44 Wines and Spirits.
