Ever heard the saying "happier than a pig in shit"? We're lobbying hard to change that vivid expression to "happier than a pig on a brewery tour," as the Muddy Pig and Pig and Fiddle restaurants gear up for a three-brewery tour plus dinner events for local beer fans.

On July 12, a bus will depart from Pig and Fiddle in Edina, starting things off with a pint at the pub before moving to the destinations of Steel Toe, Surly, and 612. The entire ride, including food and beverages, will cost $45 per person and take about four to six hours, depending where patrons get on the bus, as it will pick up customers at the Muddy Pig and deliver them back if they chose not to drive to Edina. After the tours, a dinner of sausage sandwiches mit kraut will be served at Pig and Fiddle before the bus heads back to St. Paul for a final drop off. The bus is a 53-seat yellow school bus and limited tickets are available.

Mark Van Wie, an owner of both restaurants, has previous experience with Twin Cities beer tours, having previously organized the "I Love Beer" rides when he was a partner at Great Waters Brewing in St. Paul. "This is our first brewery tour [here] but, given the increasing number of breweries and the interest, I think they will become a regular thing," says Van Wie. A second run is already tentatively scheduled for August 16, though the participating breweries haven't been announced.

Asked how he chose the first three breweries to visit, Van Wie was succinct. "Different cities, different beers, great people," he says. "And all three brands sell very well for us at the Fiddle." Should a St. Paul brewery tour be booked in the future, it is likely that the starting point would be at the Muddy Pig instead of in Edina.
