Just in case you've been looking for an incentive to get on the new Green Line, events company GetKnit is offering a Light Rail brewery crawl -- Rails & Ales -- on Saturday, September 13. Yes, technically, one could ride the rails and drink the beers without a planned tour, but GetKnit has teamed up with partners at the various stops to offer an "event passport" with discounts, exclusive beers, and merchandise at all eight stops along the line.

The basics of the rail crawl are simple. Patrons can check in at 1 of 3 stations they choose and use their daylong rail pass and passport to get exclusive deals, special merchandise, firkins, and cask beers, and two free pints included with their tickets. The eight breweries participating are Fulton, Day Block, Town Hall Brewery, Urban Growler, Burning Brothers, Tin Whiskers, and Great Waters -- a mix of senior establishments, new start-ups, gluten-free outfits, taprooms, and brewpubs.

The tour is self-guided, a change from GetKnit's bus tours, but details in the passport will help guide participants along their journey.

"For this particular event, we wanted to create something that was similar to a choose-your-own-adventure book," explains GetKnit's Matt Plank. "Our 'story' takes place in the Green Line corridor and its 'main characters' are the truly unique eight breweries along its rails. We are going to really encourage participants to not just taste new beers but enjoy foods along the way as well."

The special tappings for the one-off beers will be staggered throughout the day to allow patrons to set their schedules accordingly. Of course, GetKnit encourages responsible and safe behavior, stressing that breweries will treat this as "business as usual," meaning they reserve the right not to serve guests who have had too much.

GetKnit will announce the live music and special beer varieties and schedules closer to the event. Tickets are now on sale and tonight from 6 to 9 p.m., GetKnit will be at Tin Whiskers to promote the crawl with ticket incentives, Rails & Ales pint glasses, a cask conditioned IPA, and more.
