Where does Goldy go to grab cheap game-day grub?
A reader writes:

I remember when Benchwarmer Bob's was still open. They would offer $0.50 burgers during the Gopher football games.

I would like to know if there is anyone out there that offers such specials during the Gopher Games anymore?

Chef's table in Minneapolis?

Categories: Ask the Critic

question mark.jpg
I'm looking to book a chef's table for my parents 50th wedding anniversary in the Twin Cities next week. The restaurant scene has changed drastically over the last few years and thought you would have some solid recommendations.

We are looking at downtown Minneapolis or anything between Wayzata and downtown. Do you have any suggestions?

Ask the Critic: A 40th birthday and the Eddie Vedder ukulele tour

Categories: Ask the Critic

question mark.jpg
We're headed to Minneapolis for the 4th of July weekend to celebrate a 40th birthday and to see the Eddie Vedder Ukulele tour (kinda random, but we are!). Any good restaurant recommendations? Would be great if there was something really special for the birthday, but also just any great, local, different places that you would recommend.

We are staying at the Hotel Minneapolis and the concert is at the Orpheum Theatre.

I'm looking for good biscuits and gravy. I found the Best Of this subject from 1998, with a blurb, but I didn't see what restaurant in which the article was written. Can you give me any clues?

What's the best bill-splitting etiquette when using a Groupon?

Categories: Ask the Critic

question mark.jpg
The rise of Groupon, LivingSocial, Deal Stork, and other advance-purchase coupons has created a new source of social anxiety: how to split the check.

Washington DC's City Paper recently looked into the question of dining-by-deal-site etiquette when a blog post's author relayed the story of having invited a friend to a Bethesda mussel bar to take advantage of a coupon she had purchased from LivingSocial. She wanted to know if her deal-dining companion should pay a larger portion of the final bill to help cover the initial cost of the deal, or if the deal-buyer should assume the responsibility for the initial cost.

Help! Dinner spot in the south metro?

Categories: Ask the Critic

question mark.jpg
I am trying to find a restaurant in the southern suburbs for a meet-up and am having no luck. A former co-worker lives in Faribault and she's going to meet me for dinner, so I want to pick somewhere that won't require her to drive all the way into the Cities. I am thinking Lakeville/Apple Valley/Burnsville/Eagan. I'm hoping to do better than Applebees.

Korean food 101: Intro to banchan

Hoban Banchan 3 (1).JPG

Korean meal is never complete without banchan
Recently, the Hot Dish received a letter from a reader suggesting an article on banchan, the little dishes that automatically appear on tables at Korean restaurants.

I find that whole process alienating, since I have no idea what I am getting, or what to do with it. Do I use the kimchi as a condiment? What did they do to those sprouts? What do I do with this food?

To answer these questions, we went on a chili- and garlic-laced mission to find out what banchan is all about.

My parents are coming into town...where should we get dinner?

Categories: Ask the Critic

question mark.jpg
My parents are coming into town this week, and possibly my cousin who lives out in Hudson. I'm trying to figure out a good place for us to go out to eat, but it needs to be something, price-wise and dish-wise, that would appeal to my small town Midwestern parents. Any suggestions? I'd prefer to do something nicer than a brew pub (which usually works fine for them) but I usually can't get too adventurous with them either...

Blackbird reopens! Can I use an old gift certificate at the new restaurant?

Categories: Ask the Critic

question mark.jpg
Blackbird Cafe reopened this week in its new location at 38th and Nicollet, prompting this reader question:

If I have a gift certificate to Blackbird. Is it still good at the new Blackbird? Am I an asshole for wanting to use it? Or does this GC not apply since, in theory, this is a different restaurant, so I just have to eat the GC?
