Popping Bottles on a Budget: Cheap Date Night at Cafe Lurcat

Categories: Dining Deals

When we first heard about the Sunday evening date night at Café Lurcat, we were incredulous. Two starters, two entrees, and two desserts plus a bottle of red, white, or bubbly -- all for a Ulysses S. Grant ($50)? It simply couldn't be true. Café Lurcat is a first-class restaurant in a fantastic location. It's far and away the most glamorous establishment we've visited for a date night, and we were delighted to find out (after some internet sleuthing) that the D'Amico restaurant chain does amazing date nights at its other locations as well, all on Sunday evening, all offering a brilliant deal.

If you've got something to celebrate, this is the place to do it. Get dressed up, slap on some heels, (don't worry, you won't have to walk far, parking is pretty easy and free on Sunday night), and let yourself be enveloped by the warm, low lighting and impossibly delicious aromas emanating from the kitchen. It's a good idea to make a reservation beforehand online, because this date night is a popular one.

Cozy up with your honey at this equal parts rustic and romantic bar.

Week 4 of our official Date Night Research brings us to Facebook, loading and refreshing the Red Stag Supperclub's page throughout the day to see if Date Night details (and pictures) have been posted. As with the Bryant-Lake Bowl, options are limited, so we cross our fingers and hold our breath for a delightful (and bean-less) adventure.

And on the third week, we packed up our belongings, made sure our water bottles were filled and our emergency blanket packed, and forded the river to St. Paul. Now, before you click the X in the upper left of the window, just stay a bit longer. Even though St. Paul is just right across Ol' Man River, sometimes it can seem so. much. farther. Especially on a weekday. But we steeled ourselves and hopped onto 94 East toward the Ngon Bistro, located on University between Grotto and Avon, to take advantage of their Wednesday night Date Night.

As soon as we got through the doors, everybody got about 30 percent more attractive. The dim, romantic lighting and warm yellow walls made our pasty visages glow, and the tables and booths were comfortable and inviting. Our favorite part was the bar, adorned with shelves upon shelves of records and, of course, a decorative rifle. The bistro was bustling, and large white bowls of steaming hot, fragrant soup passed by, amping us up for our culinary adventure.

The Lanes at Bryant-Lake Bowl

We're with Garfield on this one: Mondays. We hate 'em. But some restaurants are trying to change our attitudes about this bummer of a day, so as the moths continue to fly out of our wallets for the second week in a row, we explore what Lake Street has to offer in the inexpensive evening-out genre: Monday's Cheap Date Night at Bryant-Lake Bowl.

Bryant-Lake Bowl is an intriguing little jewel located on Lake Street between Bryant and Aldrich. The lanes were built in the '30s, "so all kinds of weird shit could happen, but you guys are just playing for fun, right?" asked our charismatic server. Right. The dining area is small, a bit cramped, but has a fun retro feel. We squeezed into our seats, wondering whether this meal would be a real turkey, or a gutter ball.

Everybody still broke? Cool. Us too. That's why, for the next several weeks, we'll be seeking out the best inexpensive date nights the city has to offer. We all deserve to be wined and dined every once in a while, and bringing home a greasy bag of Popeye's and Piranha 3D for a special night in is only cute and quirky once. Or twice. Or maybe every Friday. Stop judging us.

Free fro-yo for moms at Forever Yogurt on Mother's Day

Mothers are forever underappreciated. They birthed you, changed your diapers, dealt with the crappy black metal you blasted at two in the morning throughout your high school years, and still love you immeasurably. Mother's Day shouldn't be the only time you show that special lady the appreciation she deserves, but it's certainly not to be ignored. Might we suggest fro-yo to mark the occasion?

Hell's Kitchen to offer snowstorm discount Friday, in honor of this interminable winter

Happy Spring, everyone! Isn't it lovely to feel the sun's rays on your pale skin, to turn down your tired radiator, and to watch your Uptown garden begin to grow? Oh wait, this is Minnesota, the land of two seasons: excessively hot and dangerously cold. According to every radio station within a 30-mile radius, we're about to get pounded with a whopping six to 10 inches of snow. In April. Fifteen days after the start of spring. Why do we live here again?

When Minnesota is on its worst behavior, it's places like Hell's Kitchen that keep us from acting on impulse and buying the next one-way ticket to Arizona. During tomorrow's spring snowstorm, Hell's Kitchen is offering 50 percent off any entree when you purchase another of equal or greater value. Act while you can, because this is the first (and could be the last) deal of its kind.

Desperate to binge before lent, eat free food, and support a good cause all at once? The International House of Pancakes has got you covered with its ninth annual National Pancake Day.

On Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m., IHOP is offering free short stacks of pancakes in exchange for an optional donation to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Donations from Minneapolis-area IHOPs will be sent to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare. Last year, IHOP served 4.5 million free pancakes and donated almost $3 million to charity. This year, they hope to do the same.
