Grand Avenue just got a little sadder

The neon sign on their window is still glowing the word "Open," but Coffee News's management team added a sign above it that reads "always and forever" and another one below that says "in our hearts!" Tschida Bakery closing in St. Paul

closed-sign.jpg
After 34 years of running his old-fashioned bakery and almost three years of trying to sell it, Tschida Bakery owner Brian Anderson is finally hanging up his flour-covered apron and retiring, reports the Pioneer Press.

One of the hidden gems in this year's Best Undiscovered Neighborhood (St. Paul's North End), Tschida was famous for its basic pastries, including super fluffy filled doughnuts, danishes, moist (even when day-old) muffins, and perhaps their best-loved items, poppy seed bread and cinnamon swirl bread. They also experienced 15 minutes of fame when the bakery was used to shoot the wedding cake shopping scene in the movie Grumpier Old Men.

What can residents expect to see moving into this Rice Street storefront?

Jack's closing
After a tumultuous few months, it looks like Jack's Cafe will close its doors for good.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Matt Perry, the Nicollet East Harriet Business Association (NEHBA) president, broke the news via Twitter writing, "Jack's (46/Bryant) formerly Java Jacks is closing this Friday (4/27). As far as I know, a non-food business will be replacing it."

We visited Jack's Cafe in February, after chef Kevin Kathman, who got his start under famed chef Thomas Keller at French Laundry before coming to work at Barbette and other local restaurants, was hired to take control of the kitchen and bring his refined touch to all areas of Jack's menu. The ambiance, experience, and light-handed plates of gorgeously sculptural food all showed great promise, and confidence in the revamp of the former coffee shop was running high.
