The Dog of the South

Categories: General Archive

A year or so ago my colleague Michael Tortorello turned me onto to Charles Portis, a very funny Arkansas novelist with a wonderfully laconic prose style. His books are full of great comic characters whose voices you can usually hear like they?re standing right behind you. Here?s a excerpt from Norwood, Portis?s short 1966 debut novel.

I also highly recommend The Dog of the South. Portis fans might get a kick out this piece from the Village Voice, which compares passages from the novelist to passages from Bill Clinton?s autobiography.
