Restored Peckinpah epic gets new theatrical release

Categories: General Archive
Jack Mathews at the New York Daily News has the scoop on the current re-release of Major Dundee, Sam "The Wild Bunch" Peckinpah's butchered 1965 film starring Charlton Heston and Richard Harris. If you remember liking the original version but feeling that there was something missing from it, you were right: 50 minutes were cut by its producer. Worse, he cut the negative, ensuring-- hoping?-- the footage would never be replaced; however, 12 of those minutes were recently found in storage and reinserted into the film. While Mathews says it still doesn't make Dundee the masterpiece it might have been, it is a better picture, and one that time has been kind to. You can read his whole story here.
