Imagine
SXSW in Duluth, but with all eccentric local bands and zero industry presence, and you get a sense of the chaotic, indie-rock Mardi Gras fun of
Duluth's
Homegrown Festival (
MySpace), now in its ninth year, the climactic last couple of nights occuring tonight and tomorrow (here's the
full schedule). My
review (more
here) of last year's should give you some flavor of its anarchic yet downhome spirit, and why I consider the event as much a staple of May's first weekend in Minnesota as the lowrider show at
Cinco de Mayo festival on St. Paul West Side (Friday and Saturday), and
the May Day parade and festival in Minneapolis's Powerhorn Park (on Sunday).
