SPL to rattle bones tonight at Barfly's Loft

Perennially overcast, grimy, and gothic, London seems a fitting home for the dubstep movement, a musical shotgun marriage that fuses the stoned atmospherics of dub reggae with the cold digital crunch of drum 'n' bass.  The mood is almost universally bass-heavy and dark, though there are bold flashes of unexpected beauty or clanking industrial menace, depending on the artist.  And, just like its rave-friendly parents, dubstep has extended its reach beyond England to anywhere there is a concrete sprawl that will welcome such striking, spiky music.  Enter Sam Poole, a.k.a. SPL, an emerging American DJ and producer that aims to wrench some of the spotlight away from the British.

Julius The Mad Thinker brings Chicago house to 'Black'

Categories: Local Nightlife

Thumbnail image for madthinker.jpg

Just like Detroiters with their techno, New Yorkers with hip-hop and, uh, Clevlanders with their rock, you can't tell folks from Chicago much about house music. Coming from where the music was birthed, there's an innate sense of knowledge (combined with a hint of superiority) that will inevitably make you feel like a student, while they are the teachers. Julius the Mad Thinker has that sort of birth rite authority when it comes to house music. The rub is, like all DJs from Chicago, he's usually right...

Scott Weiland comes to town solo

Categories: Concert Preview

When Stone Temple Pilots made the jump from one-hit grungsters to superstars thanks to their second single, "Plush" it was easy to blame it on Scott Weiland, his baritone shaped into a growl that nearly mimiced one Eddie Vedder, who career had already gone supernova with Pearl Jam. Catching the video on MTV made it even tougher to separate the two, with Weiland's anxious posture, arms wrapped tight around his frame, a mirror image of Vedder behind  the mic. At that moment, the grunge movement became a money making commodity.

So here's the deal: maybe some of you are familiar with me and maybe not, but I'm a bit of a loud mouth so you'll get to know me quick. I DJ and throw parties around town, most notably the monthly bass-in-your-face crunk + hyphy celebration of music that slaps: GET CRYPHY.

The Hold Steady, Atmosphere in good company on new Coachella lineup

Categories: Music News
Coachella_2009.jpg

There's something special about the Coachella festival, officially celebrating its 10th birthday this year with it's April 17 weekend lineup. Having attended in 2006 (deservedly known as "The Daft Punk year") and normally prone to festival anxiety, I can personally attest to the near tangible do-what-you-wanna vibe in the sweat-soaked desert air that many repeat Coachella goers say is what keeps them coming back year after year to the sprawling super-green acres of the Empire Polo Field. But Coachella's 3-day lineup of often-throwback headliners and its massive supporting cast of what's now in music makes Coachella unmissable to music lovers, last year seeing a most noteworthy performance by Prince (the "Purple Rain" Prince, not the "312" Prince).

Speaking of Minneapolis natives, this year's lineup features a couple more: The Hold Steady and Atmosphere, both touring late last year and making stops at First Avenue. Preceding them on the 2009 10th anniversary lineup are solo Beatle Paul McCartney (is it just me or is this a weird choice for this fest?), The Killers (meh) and The Cure (repeat Coachella performers). Could also quite do without Amy 'No really, I'm totally sober now' Winehouse. But wait! Look deeper inside the lineup at the artists sentenced to a smaller font and you'll find better things to be excited about: The Presets, Roni Size, Antony & the Johnsons (as well as his other project, Hercules & Love Affair), DJ Craze and DJ Klever, Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper, Felix Da Housecat, Public Enemy, Bloody Beetroots and more. All of this begs the question: Who wouldn't want to dance themselves into a wicked sun stroke for three days on end in Indo? That's what we thought.

Feel free to share your opinions of the new lineup below.
